Aston Villa Agrees Deal for Chelsea Winger Alejandro Garnacho

The transfer comes after Aston Villa and Chelsea recently concluded a British-record transfer deal for Morgan Rogers, who moved to Chelsea. Both clubs were recently fined by UEFA for breaching financial sustainability regulations, and they are navigating strict guidelines to avoid further sanctions. Chelsea, in particular, is operating under a four-year settlement agreement with UEFA, which imposes stricter financial rules, even though the club is not participating in European competition this season.
Aston Villa‘s significant profit from the sale of Morgan Rogers is expected to help the club comply with both UEFA and Premier League financial constraints. However, the club also needs to rebuild its squad following several departures to ensure competitiveness across all fronts this season. Chelsea made Garnacho available for transfer this summer, and Aston Villa, under manager Unai Emery, had been looking for a winger, with Emery reportedly admiring the Argentinian player.
The complex nature of the deal is influenced by UEFA guidelines regarding player exchange transactions. If two transfers are concluded within 45 days of each other and involve similar payment obligations, they can be deemed a single player exchange. This would reduce Aston Villa‘s profit in UEFA calculations to the net difference in fees, potentially impacting the financial benefits from the Rogers sale.
A loan with an obligation to buy is a mechanism often used to guarantee a permanent sale while circumventing certain rules. However, UEFA is reportedly tightening loopholes, and if a condition for a permanent move is considered virtually certain, the player’s registration must be recognized as a permanent transfer from the start of the loan agreement. This would still lead to a player exchange transaction under UEFA‘s view.

During his first season at Chelsea, Garnacho made 25 appearances in the Premier League, accumulating 1,217 minutes, which averaged less than 49 minutes per game. He registered five goal involvements, averaging one every 243 minutes. In comparison, Morgan Rogers and Emiliano Buendia, who played in similar positions for Aston Villa last season, managed 1,528 and 1,527 minutes respectively. Rogers averaged a goal involvement every 90 minutes, while Buendia averaged one every 190 minutes.
Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has expressed strong opposition to the potential transfer, describing it as a “nightmare.” He questioned Garnacho‘s ability and attitude, citing his performance at Chelsea where he scored just once in 24 Premier League appearances. Agbonlahor suggested that Garnacho has the “ego of Ronaldo or Messi” but lacks the talent. He also raised concerns about Garnacho‘s potential impact on the positive dressing room atmosphere at Aston Villa, particularly following the departure of Morgan Rogers.
Despite the criticism, Agbonlahor acknowledged that Unai Emery has a proven track record of helping players whose careers have stalled, stating, “If there’s any manager who can sort him out, then it’s Unai Emery.” The proposed move could mean a tactical adjustment for Unai Emery‘s system when Garnacho is on the pitch. While Buendia and Rogers offer versatility and tend to move inside from the flanks, Garnacho typically hugs the touchline and stays wide. This would require either flexibility in Emery‘s attacking patterns or adaptability from Garnacho.
Garnacho has previously operated on the right wing, scoring a goal in an FA Cup final win for Manchester United from that position. However, he is less known for cutting inside. The deal aims to see a resurgent Alejandro Garnacho playing on the left wing for Aston Villa.
